FIDE Appeals to Canadian Authorities for Urgent Visa Processing for Players: FIDE Candidates Tournament in Jeopardy
FIDE Appeals to Canadian Authorities for Visa Delays Threatening Prestigious Chess Tournament
In a historic turn of events, the FIDE Candidates Tournament, one of the most prestigious chess tournaments in the world, is facing a significant hurdle as FIDE has issued a public appeal to Canadian authorities to expedite the visa process for several players. With only 33 days left before the tournament is set to begin in Toronto on April 4, FIDE has expressed grave concerns about the timely arrival of players.
The appeal, published by FIDE on Twitter, urged the Canadian government to take action and issue visas and permission for players to enter the country. FIDE’s General Director, GM Emil Sutovsky, even tagged Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the appeal, hinting that the event could be moved if the visa issues are not resolved.
According to FIDE, players from various countries worldwide who submitted their visa applications months ago have not yet received any updates on their status. This delay could potentially affect a total of eight players, including top players from India and Russia.
The situation is further complicated by recent geopolitical tensions, with relations between India and Canada strained after a Canadian Sikh activist was killed on Canadian soil last year. Additionally, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to sanctions on Russian athletes, further complicating the participation of some players in international events.
In an update on March 2, Canadian Chess Federation President Vladimir Drkulec stated that over 40 people are waiting for visas, with some having applied over four months ago. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that if significant progress is not made within a week, the tournament will be cancelled. FIDE has a backup plan to move the tournament to Spain if necessary.
The fate of the FIDE Candidates Tournament hangs in the balance as players, organizers, and fans await a resolution to the visa issues. The success and integrity of the tournament, as well as Canada’s reputation as a host, are at stake as the clock ticks down to the start date. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
