United States Secures Victory in World Senior Team Championship for 50+, England Claims Gold in 65+ Division

FIDE World Senior Team Chess Championships 2024: U.S. and England Claim Top Spots

The FIDE World Senior Team Chess Championships recently concluded in Krakow, Poland, with the U.S. and England emerging as the champions in the 50+ and 65+ sections, respectively. The tournament featured 65 teams and 307 players, including 32 grandmasters, competing in a nine-round Swiss format.

In the 50+ category, the U.S. team, consisting of top players like Jaan Ehlvest and Alexander Shabalov, secured the gold medal after a dominant performance throughout the tournament. Despite a loss to Italy in round four, the U.S. team bounced back and won every other round to claim the top spot.

On the women’s side, Estonia clinched the gold in the 50+ category, narrowly edging out the U.S. team. WIM Monika Tsiganova was a standout performer for Estonia, scoring impressive victories and gaining rating points in the process.

In the 65+ section, England emerged victorious with a strong performance led by GMs John Nunn and Michael Adams. The team went undefeated, securing seven victories and two draws to claim the gold medal. Nunn and Adams also won individual gold in their respective categories, further solidifying England’s dominance in the tournament.

Overall, the FIDE World Senior Team Chess Championships showcased top-tier competition and exceptional performances from players across the globe. The focus now shifts to the upcoming World Senior Chess Championships for individuals in November and the U.S. Senior Championship in St. Louis next week.
