WGM Jennifer Shahade Files Lawsuit Against US Chess, President, and Writer for Defamation and Retaliation

Two-time U.S. Women’s Chess Champion Jennifer Shahade has taken a bold step by filing a major lawsuit against US Chess, its president Randy Bauer, and chess writer Peter Tamburro. The lawsuit alleges defamation, retaliation, and discrimination after Shahade publicly spoke out about sexual misconduct within the chess community.

The complaint, filed in the New Jersey Superior Court, outlines serious misconduct within US Chess, including defamation, discrimination, retaliatory actions, the spread of false information, and invasion of privacy. Shahade, a prominent figure in the chess world, has been vocal about her experiences and is now taking legal action to seek justice.

Shahade’s allegations stem from her claims of sexual assault by GM Alejandro Ramirez, which sparked a MeToo movement within the chess community. Several women, including WIM Sabrina Chevannes and FM Yosha Iglesias, have come forward with their own stories of abuse, highlighting the pervasive issue of sexual misconduct in the chess world.

The lawsuit also points to US Chess’s failure to act on reports of misconduct in the past, allowing Ramirez to continue in positions of influence. Shahade resigned from her position at US Chess, citing hostility and lack of support after coming forward with her allegations.

One key element of the lawsuit is Shahade’s claim that US Chess endorsed an article by Pete Tamburro, which she alleges is derogatory and factually false. Shahade argues that the article was part of a broader effort to silence her and discredit her disclosures about misconduct within the organization.

Represented by attorney Linda Kenney Baden, Shahade is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as reforms within US Chess to address sexual misconduct. US Chess has denied the allegations and stated that they will vigorously defend themselves.

This lawsuit sheds light on the challenges faced by women in the chess world and the importance of holding organizations accountable for their handling of sexual misconduct allegations. Shahade’s courage in speaking out and taking legal action is a significant step towards creating a safer and more inclusive environment for all chess players.
