On July 20, 2024, International Chess Day will be celebrated in a unique way as the International Chess Federation (FIDE) marks its 100th anniversary. To commemorate this special occasion, FIDE is aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the most chess games played in a 24-hour period. The current record stands at 5.4 million games, set on June 20, 2024.

Chess enthusiasts from around the world are invited to participate in this record-breaking attempt on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Whether you are a seasoned player or a beginner, this is your chance to be part of a global event and make history. As Guinness World Records says, “Be officially amazing!”

How to Participate

Players can take part in the attempt by playing at least one game of chess on a registered platform or in an over-the-board tournament. The time period for games to be played is between 00:00 on July 20 and 00:00 CEST on July 21. Games can be played online or over-the-board, with specific guidelines for each.

Online Games

Online games must have a minimum time control of five minutes per game with no increment or three minutes per game with a two-second increment. Qualifying games should have a minimum of 15 moves per player. Platforms such as Chess.com, Lichess, FIDE Online Arena, Simple Chess, and Chess Alliance are participating in the record attempt. Players must be registered with the platform, and games against computers will not be counted.

Over-The-Board Games

Over-the-board games also require a minimum time control of five minutes per game with no increment or three minutes per game with a two-second increment. Players participating in OTB games must be part of an event registered by a national federation. FIDE arbiters will supervise the games, and the number of games played will be submitted for the record attempt.
