Sanjay Kapoor unanimously elected as FIDE India Zone President

Former All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Sanjay Kapoor has been unanimously elected as FIDE India Zone President, marking a significant moment for chess governance in India. The announcement was made during the annual general meeting of AICF in Ahmedabad, where Sanjay Kapoor was elected for a four-year term.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich congratulated Sanjay on his new role, highlighting the responsibility entrusted to him in overseeing the growth and development of chess in India and internationally. Sanjay expressed his commitment to the game’s expansion, stating his goal of producing Grandmasters from every state in the country.

Sanjay’s leadership was evident during the successful staging of the 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad in India, showcasing his dedication to the betterment of chess in the country. His vision includes tapping into India’s talent pool to nurture world-class chess players from all regions.

In addition, FIDE recently launched a Guinness World Record attempt for the most games played online and over the board in 24 hours on International Chess Day. The initiative saw participation from over 109 national federations and major online chess platforms, with nearly 350 events held globally.

FIDE officials, including President Arkady Dvorkovich and former world champions like Viswanathan Anand, gathered in Paris to commemorate 100 years since the founding of FIDE. The central ceremony brought together renowned players and chess officials from around the world to celebrate the milestone.

Sanjay Kapoor’s election as FIDE India Zone President signals a new chapter for chess in India, with a focus on growth, development, and the cultivation of top-tier players nationwide.
