Chess Prodigy Manon Reja Neer Emerges as National Chess Champion Amidst Tragedy

FIDE Master Manon Reja Neer, a 14-year-old chess prodigy, has emerged as the undefeated champion in the 48th National Chess Championship, beating three Grandmasters to claim the title. However, his victory was overshadowed by the sudden demise of his beloved coach, Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman.

Neer, who was on the brink of confirming his championship win with two rounds to spare, was left in shock and disbelief after learning about the passing of his mentor, Zia sir. The teenager expressed his emotions, stating that he was at a loss for words to describe the impact of the loss.

Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, who tragically suffered a cardiac arrest during a match in the championship, had been coaching players in recent years, with Neer being one of his students. Neer shared a close bond with Zia, considering him a rival and a mentor, and was deeply affected by his sudden death.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Neer’s victory in the championship was a fitting tribute to his late coach, as he followed in Zia’s footsteps by winning his first title at the age of 14. The ninth-grader, who is now the 16th player to win the national championship, dedicated his win to Zia sir.

Neer’s impressive performance in the championship, including draws against top Grandmasters, showcased his talent and determination. The young chess prodigy credited his success to his experience in the 21st Bangkok Chess Club Open, where he secured crucial wins that prepared him for the national championship.

Looking ahead, Neer has set his sights on becoming an International Master and eventually a Grandmaster, with dreams of becoming a world champion. He emphasized the need for financial support, sponsorship, and training to achieve his goals, expressing gratitude to those who have supported his journey so far.

As Neer continues to make strides in the world of chess, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring young players and a reminder of the impact of mentors like Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman in shaping the future of the game.
