Springlake-Earth ISD Implements Stricter Drug Testing Policy for Student Athletes

In a move to combat the rising issue of drug use among students, Springlake-Earth ISD has revised its drug testing policy to bring a stiffer penalty to first-time offenders. Superintendent Denver Krum announced the changes in July, stating that the first offense will now result in students sitting out all contests for 30 days, in addition to receiving counseling.

Previously, the first offense only included counseling and served as a warning with no punishment. The revised policy now includes escalating penalties for repeat offenses, with students facing a 60-day suspension for a second offense and a one-year suspension for a third offense.

Krum emphasized that the policy only applies to students participating in extra-curricular activities, and those who do not partake in these activities are not subject to drug testing. He explained that the goal of the policy is not to be punitive, but rather to give students a reason to say no to drugs.

The decision to revise the policy was made in response to concerns about a growing trend of student vaping, which Krum described as an “epidemic.” While no students have been caught using drugs, the district received information from parents and students about increased drug use, prompting the need for stricter measures.

In addition to the policy changes, the district also welcomed Juan Salas as its new head football coach and athletic director during the July meeting. Krum praised Salas’s experience in the coaching community, noting his previous roles at Patton Springs and Melissa Valley.

The revised drug testing policy will go into effect for the 2024-25 school year, with Krum stating that the policy will only need to be presented to the board if further revisions are made. The district is hopeful that these changes will help create a safer and drug-free environment for its students.
