Team MGD1 Clinches Silver Medal in Inaugural World Blitz Team Championships

Team MGD1, led by GM Arjun Erigaisi, made India proud by clinching the silver medal in the inaugural World Blitz Team Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan. The team, consisting of all-Indian star players, put up a stellar performance throughout the tournament, showcasing their skills and teamwork.

In the final match against Team WR Chess, Arjun Erigaisi, the highest rated Indian GM in Classic Ranking, pulled off a major upset by defeating former world champion Magnus Carlsen in Round 1. Despite this impressive victory, Team MGD1 fell short as their opponents secured wins on the other boards, giving them a comfortable lead.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Arjun Erigaisi expressed his joy at beating Magnus Carlsen but emphasized the importance of the collective effort that led to their success. The team’s unity and fighting spirit were key factors in securing the silver medal in the championship.

The World Blitz Team Championships featured 40 teams competing in a group-cum-knockout format, with each team including a female player and an amateur. Team MGD1, with players like GM Srinath Narayanan, SL Narayanan, B Adhiban, D Harika, and amateur Mihir Shah, dominated their group stage matches and continued their winning streak in the knockout rounds.

MGD1’s co-founder, Sreekar Chennapragada, expressed pride in the team’s achievement and their commitment to the development of chess in India. The team’s success in the championship highlights the talent and potential of Indian chess players on the global stage.

With a history of success in team championships, including a bronze medal in the World Rapid Team Championships in 2023, Team MGD1 has established itself as a formidable force in the world of chess.
