Exciting Finish at the 124th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship in Norfolk, Virginia

The 124th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship came to a thrilling conclusion in Norfolk, Virginia, with the final round going down to the wire. Four players entered Sunday’s games with 7/8 scores, making it a tight race for the championship title. In the end, GMs Jianchao Zhou and Semen Khanin emerged victorious after intense battles against GMs Mackenzie Molner and Fidel Corrales.

The games were filled with strategic maneuvers and tactical decisions that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Corrales and Khanin engaged in a marathon game, with Khanin slowly gaining the upper hand as Corrales struggled with time trouble. On the other board, Molner played energetically against Zhou, but Zhou capitalized on Molner’s pawn sacrifice to secure the win.

With both Zhou and Khanin finishing with impressive 8/9 scores, an Armageddon playoff was required to determine the champion. In a tense battle, Khanin emerged victorious, claiming the title of U.S. Open Champion and a $200 bonus.

While Zhou and Khanin were not eligible for the U.S. Chess Championship spot, the top American finisher would earn the qualification. GM Awonder Liang secured the spot after a creative and adventurous game against Mikhail Antipov, who made a fatal blunder in the endgame.

In the end, Liang, Antipov, and Varuzhan Akobian each received cash prizes for their performances. The tournament showcased the skill and determination of the players, providing an exciting conclusion to the prestigious event.
