Shreyas Royal: 15-Year-Old British Indian Chess Prodigy Becomes England’s Youngest Grandmaster

In a remarkable feat of skill and determination, 15-year-old Shreyas Royal has made history by becoming England’s youngest grandmaster (GM) after his recent victory in the British Chess Championships. The London schoolboy achieved this milestone by securing the final GM Norm during the championship held in Hull last week.

This achievement is not only a personal triumph for Shreyas but also a significant moment for his family. In 2018, his family was granted leave to remain in the UK due to his exceptional talent in chess, after his father’s work visa had expired. Jitendra Singh, Shreyas’ father, expressed his joy and gratitude for the support they have received in the UK.

Shreyas surpassed the previous record set by Grand Master David Howell, who became the youngest grandmaster in England at the age of 16 in 2007. His outstanding performance in the championship included victories over top players like Howell and draws with other grandmasters.

When asked for advice for aspiring young chess players, Shreyas emphasized the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges. He and his father now have their sights set on representing the national chess team and achieving even greater success in the future.

Born in India, Shreyas moved to the UK with his parents at a young age. The English Chess Federation (ECF) had advocated for his continued stay in the UK to nurture his talent, and their efforts were successful in securing an extension to their stay and eventual British citizenship.

Shreyas’ journey in the world of chess has been nothing short of remarkable, and he credits the support of his family and the chess community for his success. With his determination and talent, Shreyas is poised to make a lasting impact on the world of chess and inspire future generations of players.

This story is a testament to the power of dedication and hard work in achieving one’s dreams, and Shreyas Royal is a shining example of what can be accomplished with passion and perseverance in the face of adversity.
