Changi Airport Terminal 2 Reopens After Extensive Upgrade Work
Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 2 has finally reopened to passengers after three and a half years of extensive upgrade work. The upgraded terminal has added over 21,000 square meters to the existing building, equivalent to the size of three football fields, enhancing the airport’s capability to handle increased passenger traffic.
The reopening of Terminal 2 coincides with the resurgence of passenger traffic at Changi Airport, which has rebounded to 90 percent of pre-COVID levels as of September. It is anticipated that passenger volumes will fully recover by next year.
The revamped Terminal 2 boasts a central common-use Fast and Seamless Travel zone, with almost twice the number of automated check-in kiosks and bag-drop machines compared to its original setup. The immigration halls have also been expanded to accommodate more automated immigration lanes.
Passengers will be treated to a multimedia digital waterfall display known as “The Wonderfall”, standing at four stories high and complemented by a landscaped garden. In addition, a new garden oasis called “Dreamscape” in the departure transit area combines digital content, live plants, and even fish.
The reopening of Terminal 2 is a significant milestone for Changi Airport and Singapore’s aviation sector. Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean highlighted the aviation sector’s key role in Singapore’s economy, with the Changi air hub and its adjacent industries contributing over 5 percent of the country’s GDP and supporting almost 200,000 jobs.
With the ongoing construction of Terminal 5 expected to add around 50 million passengers annually to Changi’s capacity when ready in the mid-2030s, Singapore’s status as a premier air hub is set to be reinforced.
The reopening of Terminal 2 marks a new chapter in Changi Airport’s journey, offering passengers a seamless and enhanced travel experience.
