In a display of sheer dominance, Surya Sekhar Ganguly has taken the National Chess Championship by storm, winning seven games in a row. The Kolkata native has shown exceptional form, increasing his lead to one point with four rounds remaining.
Despite a slight decline in his peak rating since 2016, Ganguly’s current rating of 2583 has not hindered his performance at the RPS International School. In his latest victory, he defeated city-mate Sayantan Das, further solidifying his position at the top of the leaderboard.
Following closely behind Ganguly are five players with six points each, including defending champion S.P. Sethuraman and Diptayan Ghosh. The competition remains fierce, but Ganguly’s exceptional skill and strategic gameplay have set him apart from his rivals.
In the seventh round of the championship, Ganguly showcased his prowess on the chessboard, securing a win against Das in 64 moves. Meanwhile, Sethuraman and Ghosh also emerged victorious in their respective matches, further intensifying the battle for the championship title.
Notably, 11-year-old Madhvendra Sharma impressed spectators by holding Grandmaster N.R. Vignesh to a draw, showcasing his potential in the world of chess.
