Disgraced former South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh awaits appeal for new murder trial

Disgraced former South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh is making headlines once again as he awaits a crucial hearing that could potentially overturn his double life sentence for the murder of his wife and son. While behind bars, Murdaugh is reportedly spending his time playing chess and working as a wardkeeper’s assistant in a state prison protective unit.

According to his defense attorney, Jim Griffin, Murdaugh is an affable guy who has made friends in prison and enjoys playing chess with fellow inmates. However, his extracurricular activities are limited to the eight hours he spends out of his cell, as he is locked in his cell without freedom of movement from Friday to Monday.

Recent reports have suggested that Murdaugh is “living it up” in prison and running a side business, including a gambling ring, as claimed by Aimee Zmroczek, the lawyer representing his co-defendant. However, Griffin and the South Carolina Department of Corrections have denied these allegations, stating that Murdaugh remains in protective custody in a maximum-security prison with limited contact.

Despite the rumors and speculation surrounding Murdaugh’s activities in prison, his legal team is focused on their appellant cases. The South Carolina Supreme Court recently agreed to hear his appeal for a new murder trial based on allegations of jury tampering by a court clerk. This hearing could potentially lead to a reversal of a previous decision that denied Murdaugh’s request for a re-trial.

As the legal battle continues, Murdaugh remains in prison, where he has not faced any disciplinary sanctions since last August. While the details of his life behind bars may seem like a scene out of a movie, his lawyer remains confident in their case and looks forward to presenting it to the Supreme Court.
