Chilean Sports Consultant Threatens to Sue UEFA Over New League Phase Format

Chilean sports consultant Leandro Shara is taking on European football’s governing body, UEFA, over the new “league phase” format being introduced for its three club competitions this season. Shara claims that the format, often referred to as the “Swiss model”, is actually a system he invented and copyrighted in Chile in 2006.

The new format will see teams in each UEFA competition ranked in three 36-team leagues, playing only eight games against eight different opponents. The opponents will be determined by a computer, rather than drawn from pots as in previous years. This format replaces the traditional group stages that have been a staple of the Champions League since 1991.

Shara alleges that he has presented his format to UEFA multiple times since 2013, providing case studies and documents to support his claim. In a cease-and-desist notice sent to UEFA officials, Shara demands recognition of his ownership of the format, as well as the opportunity to attend the draw and speak to the media about his invention.

UEFA has not responded to Shara’s demands, and he has given them until August 28th to comply before threatening legal action. The future of the competitions could be at stake if UEFA does not address Shara’s concerns.

This dispute highlights the complexities of intellectual property in the world of sports, as well as the potential impact on global football competitions. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
