Chess FIDE Master Haruna Nsubuga Wins 2024 Zabasajja Memorial Chess Championship
Chess FIDE Master Haruna Nsubuga emerged victorious at the 2024 Zabasajja Memorial Chess Championship, showcasing his strategic prowess and skill on the board. Nsubuga claimed the top spot in the open category after accumulating an impressive 7.5 points over the four-day Grand Prix tournament.
His stellar performance not only earned him the prestigious title but also a handsome cash prize of Sh2.5m. Nsubuga’s triumph was a result of his hard-fought battles against a field of 150 players, showcasing his determination and talent in the game of chess.
In addition to his victory, Nsubuga also secured a spot in the Grand Prix round of 14, where he will compete for a chance to represent the country in the 2024 Olympiad in India. This opportunity further solidifies his status as a formidable force in the chess world.
International Master Arthur Ssegwanyi put up a strong fight, finishing in second place with 7.0 points and taking home a prize of Sh1.5m. South Sudan’s Gong Thong Gong claimed the bronze medal in third place, earning a cash prize of Sh75m with 6.5 points.
The women’s category saw Sana Omprakash Kayyar emerge victorious on a tiebreak against Woman Candidate Master Shakira Ampaire. Both players displayed exceptional skill, but it was Kayyar who clinched the top spot with 6.5 points, securing a cash prize of Sh0.925m.
The tournament also recognized the best junior players, with Ronald Wabwire and Zuri Tatiina leading the pack in the boys and girls categories, respectively. These young talents showcased their potential and dedication to the game, earning plaques, gold medals, and cash prizes for their outstanding performances.
The Zabasajja Memorial Chess Championship, held in honor of the late William Zabasajja, celebrated the legacy of the first Ugandan FIDE Master. The event brought together players of all ages, highlighting the diversity and talent within the chess community.
With the National Council of Sports as the main sponsor, the tournament was a resounding success, thanks to the efforts of the Uganda Chess Federation president Emmanuel Mwaka.
