Russian Chess Legend Garry Kasparov’s Cheeky Social Media Post on Indian Politics Goes Viral

Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov sparks online frenzy with witty jab at Indian politician Rahul Gandhi

Renowned chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov recently found himself in the spotlight after a clever social media post targeting Indian politician Rahul Gandhi went viral. Known for his sharp wit both on and off the chessboard, Kasparov playfully expressed his hope that his jest wouldn’t be mistaken for political advocacy or expertise.

The banter began when a user on social media platform X jokingly remarked, “feel so relieved that @Kasparov63 and @vishy64theking retired early and didn’t have to face the greatest chess genius of our times.” In his typical fashion, Kasparov responded with a witty retort, subtly emphasizing the importance of winning elections before aiming for the top spot.

“Traditional dictates that you should first win from Raebareli before challenging for the top,” quipped Kasparov, a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin who currently resides in Croatia.

The mention of Raebareli was a nod to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently filed his nomination from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi, who is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala, shared a video of himself playing chess on his mobile phone during his Lok Sabha election campaign. In the video, Gandhi named Kasparov as his favorite chess player, drawing parallels between chess strategies and political maneuvers.

After his post gained traction online, Kasparov humorously remarked, “I very much hope my little joke does not pass for advocacy or expertise in Indian politics! But as an ‘all-seeing monster with 1000 eyes,’ as I was once described, I cannot fail to see a politician dabbling in my beloved game!”

Having achieved the title of world number one for an impressive 255 weeks and becoming the youngest-ever undisputed world champion at the age of 22 in 1985, Garry Kasparov has transitioned from professional chess to political activism in recent years. His playful exchange with Rahul Gandhi has captivated social media users, showcasing Kasparov’s enduring wit and intellect both on and off the chessboard.
