Dramatic Results in the 2024 U.S. Junior, Girls’ Junior, and Senior Championships
The 2024 U.S. Junior, Girls’ Junior, and Senior championships in St. Louis have reached a critical point as players fought for first place in the eighth round. The games were intense and filled with drama, but most of the leaders managed to maintain or improve their positions heading into the final round.
In the Senior section, GM Vladimir Akopian secured first place and the title of U.S. Senior Champion with a crucial victory over IM Douglas Root. Akopian, a former 2700-rated player with an impressive resume, had never won this event before, making his victory even sweeter. GM Jesse Kraai moved up to clear second place in the standings, setting up a fierce competition for the runner-up position.
In the Girls’ Junior section, IM Alice Lee took a significant step towards first place with her fourth consecutive win. However, FM Rose Atwell remains close behind, setting up an exciting final round showdown between the two top contenders.
The Junior Championship saw all games end in draws despite several players having winning positions at various points. GM Christopher Yoo and GM Andrew Hong continue to lead the pack, with Yoo controlling his own destiny in the final round.
