Ganges Grandmasters Suffer Third Successive Defeat in Global Chess League

In a disappointing turn of events, the Ganges Grandmasters faced their third successive defeat in the Global Chess League, losing 3-12 to the PBS Alaskan Knights on the third day of the competition in London.

Five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand and Arjun Erigaisi could only manage draws in their matches, as the Alaskan Knights dominated the playing field. The Knights had ended day two on a high note, toppling the Grad Mumba Masters to take the lead, while the Ganges Grandmasters had suffered crushing defeats in their first two matches, making this a crucial game for them.

The coin toss favored the Alaskan Knights, giving them the white pieces and 20 minutes per player on the clock. Despite early momentum in favor of Ganges, the Knights gained an edge on the lower boards as time ticked down.

In a frustrating outcome for Ganges, Arjun Erigaisi missed a winning opportunity against Nodirbek Abdusattorov, resulting in a draw. Anand also could not convert his advantage against Anish Giri, leading to another draw.

The Alaskan Knights secured crucial wins on the women’s boards, with Alina Kashlinskaya and Tan Zhongyi extending their lead. Disaster struck for Ganges when Parham Maghsoodloo blundered in a winning position, gifting the full point to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.

With a comprehensive 12-3 victory, the PBS Alaskan Knights continue to soar at the top of the leaderboard with four straight wins. Meanwhile, the Ganges Grandmasters find themselves in last place with just 14 game points and no match wins.

The Global Chess League continues to showcase intense competition and strategic gameplay, with each match bringing new challenges and surprises for players and fans alike.
