Grandmaster Anish Giri Excited for Global Chess League Season 2 Debut

As anticipation builds for the upcoming second season of the Global Chess League (GCL), Grandmaster Anish Giri is gearing up for his debut at this prestigious chess event. The league, a collaboration between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is scheduled to take place from October 3 to 12 in London.

“I am thrilled to be part of the event this year. I missed out on participating last year due to a conflicting schedule, but I followed the finale with great excitement. I am looking forward to being on the other side of the screen this time,” expressed Giri, who will be representing the PBG Alaskan Knights as an Icon player. He is set to face off against other top players such as Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Viswanathan Anand, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Acknowledging the tough competition, Giri stated, “The line-up is absolutely stacked this time. My board is going to be insanely strong.” Despite the challenges ahead, the 30-year-old Grandmaster has his sights set on one goal – winning. “I will give my best to rise to the challenge,” he added.

Speaking about the unique team format of the Global Chess League, Giri remarked, “We are yet to see if the concept will be as successful in chess as it has been in cricket, but initiatives like these are crucial in elevating the sport to new heights.” He emphasized the importance of teamwork in helping each player shine and thrive under pressure.

Known for his engaging presence on social media, Giri had a message for his fans ahead of his Global Chess League debut: “I always appreciate the positive feedback on my social media and my endeavors both on and off the board. I strive to entertain others and myself, as studies show that performing better when in a good mood.” Giri also shared his plans to explore the sights and sounds of London during the 10-day event, noting the city’s beauty and abundance of leisure options.

With excitement building for the Global Chess League Season 2, fans can expect thrilling matches and fierce competition as Giri and other top players battle it out on the chessboard in London.
