In a thrilling final match, Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaise emerged victorious to secure the WR Chess Masters title after defeating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the Armageddon game. The final match, which followed two draws in Classical chess, showcased Arjun’s exceptional form and precision throughout the event.

Arjun’s journey to the top was not an easy one. He displayed his skills by defeating his friend R Praggnanandhaa in the semifinals of the knockout event before eventually overcoming Vachier-Lagrave in the final showdown. The 16-player tournament saw Arjun scoring a 2-0 victory over Sivananda Bodhana of England, who is recognized as the youngest ever to play in the Chess Olympiad for her country.

Fellow Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi also fell to Arjun, who won the second game in the two-games mini-match by a 1.5-0.5 margin. Arjun’s strategic gameplay and tactical moves kept his opponents on their toes throughout the tournament.

In the final match against Vachier-Lagrave, Arjun faced stiff resistance but managed to outmaneuver his opponent in the Armageddon game. Despite having less time on his clock, Arjun navigated the opening well and reached a balanced position. Vachier-Lagrave made some threatening moves, but Arjun remained vigilant and eventually emerged victorious after 69 moves.
