Arjun Erigaisi Makes History at Freestyle Friday Tournament

In the world of chess, there are always new records being set and milestones being achieved. The latest example of this comes from the Freestyle Friday tournament, where Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi made history with his impressive performance.

The seventh-ever Freestyle Friday event, held on March 7, saw Arjun Erigaisi become the first player to win two consecutive tournaments and the first player to win any two Freestyle Fridays. His dominance was on full display as he scored 10 points, edging out his countryman GM M Pranesh by just half a point.

Despite a setback in the sixth round against GM Sam Sevian, Arjun bounced back and delivered flawless performances in the remaining rounds. One highlight was his victory over Pranesh in the ninth round, where he managed to promote a pawn and deliver a checkmate on the 26th move, showcasing his strategic prowess.

Arjun’s exceptional gameplay put him in a three-way tie for first place, but he emerged as the sole leader with nine points. His final round victory over GM Grigoriy Oparin sealed his victory in the tournament, leaving Pranesh to settle for the runner-up position.

Other notable performances in the tournament included Jules Moussard finishing in fourth place and IM Karina Ambartsumova claiming the women’s prize with a 15th place finish.

With his historic win at the Freestyle Friday tournament, Arjun Erigaisi solidified his reputation as a formidable force in the world of chess. The tournament, dedicated to Freestyle Chess for titled players, continues to showcase the talent and skill of top players in the chess community.
