WIM Maria Gevorgyan Takes Solo Lead at Fisu World University Chess Championship

In a thrilling turn of events at the Fisu World University Chess Championship, WIM Maria Gevorgyan of Armenia has taken the solo lead at the halfway mark of the tournament. The 22-year-old chess prodigy defeated top seed Atousa Pourkashiyan of Iran and former leader WIM Ghazal Hamikifard in back-to-back matches to secure her spot at the top of the leaderboard.

Gevorgyan’s impressive performance has earned her a perfect 5-point slate in the 9-round Swiss System tournament, putting her ahead of the competition. Trailing behind her are Hakimifard and WGM Ni Shiqun of China, who share the second slot with 4 points each.

The Fisu World University Chess Championship features a strong field of players from 17 countries, including six Grandmasters, 15 International Masters, and 9 Fide Masters. The competition also includes 34 women from 15 countries, with the results of the three best scores per country being combined for team awards.
