Maurice Ashley Launches Chess Fellowship to Support Underserved Communities in the U.S.

Grandmaster Maurice Ashley is making a bold move to address the lack of representation of African Americans in top-level chess by establishing the Maurice Ashley Chess Fellowship. This initiative aims to nurture the talents of young chess players from underserved communities in the United States, providing them with essential resources such as coaching, mentorship, and financial support.

Ashley, who became the first African American grandmaster in 1999, understands the challenges faced by young talents who lack access to the right environment and support. With a personal pledge of $20,000 to kickstart the fellowship, Ashley is calling on additional sponsors to contribute to this important cause.

The initiative has garnered support from U.S. chess journalist Daaim Shabazz, who believes that targeted outreach efforts like the Maurice Ashley Chess Fellowship can not only benefit young players academically and socially but also help diversify and strengthen the global chess community.

Applications for the 2025 fellowship will open on February 1, 2025, with eligibility guidelines to be published on the U.S. Chess Trust website. Young individuals under the age of 21 who aspire to become chess professionals are encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity to compete at the highest level.
