2025 Chess & Community Conference Features Celebrity Keynote Speakers and Robotics Tournament with $1,000 Prize

The Chess & Community Conference in Athens is gearing up for its 12th annual event, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. With the theme of “Future Forward: Game Changers,” the conference will feature two celebrity keynote speakers, actor Khary Payton and Zaxby’s co-founder Zach McLeroy.

Payton, known for his roles on “The Walking Dead” and “Teen Titans,” spent his childhood in Athens and will bring his unique perspective to the conference. McLeroy, along with his childhood friend Tony Townley, founded the popular restaurant chain Zaxby’s and has since dedicated himself to philanthropy through the McLeroy Family Foundation.

The conference will also include chess and robotics tournaments, where participants will have the chance to win up to $1,000. The event is free and open to the public, and will take place at the Classic Center in downtown Athens on Saturday, Mar. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lemuel “Life” LaRoche, the executive director of Chess & Community, is excited to see the conference continue to grow and inspire the youth of Athens. Founded in 2012, Chess & Community aims to teach critical thinking skills and prepare young people to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Advance reservations can be made for the conference at chessandcommunity.org/conference-bh, although they are not required for entry. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of a truly inspiring and engaging event in the heart of Athens.
