Kerala Aiming for Top Slot in Happiness Index with Innovative Tourism Development Projects

Kerala is on a mission to claim the top spot in the happiness index, with the government fully committed to exploring all possibilities for tourism development. Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas made this announcement while inaugurating the beautification works under the railway overbridge near S.N. College, which is the pilot project under the design policy being implemented in the State.

The primary objective of this project is to transform unused public spaces and physical assets into sustainable and aesthetically appealing sites. Minister Riyas expressed pride in Kerala being the first state to have formulated a design policy for the Public Works Department and Tourism department. The launch of this project not only aims to beautify neglected spaces but also integrates tourism schemes with innovative design policies.

Minister Riyas highlighted the potential of creatively transforming unused public spaces into areas for relaxation and entertainment for both locals and tourists. He emphasized that many similar sites across the state could be converted into people-friendly spaces, ultimately contributing to the happiness and well-being of the community.

The project, with a budget of ₹2 crore, will develop a 70-cent site under the railway overbridge with various recreational facilities catering to all age groups. The plan includes walking tracks, street furniture, food kiosks, game courts, a chess block, skating area, open gym, and a yoga-cum-meditation center.

The Kollam Corporation will be responsible for managing and maintaining the facility in collaboration with the District Tourism Promotion Council and other departments. The project is set to be completed by the end of 2024 and will be handed over to Kollam as a New Year gift in 2025.

Local MLA M. Noushad praised the innovative projects of the Tourism department for revitalizing the tourism sector in the state. With all procedures in place, the project is expected to be completed within the deadline, providing a much-needed boost to the tourism industry in Kerala.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Mayor Prasanna Earnest, KTIL chairperson S.K. Sajeesh, District Collector N. Devidas, and other officials from the tourism department. The project signifies a step towards enhancing the overall happiness and well-being of the people of Kerala through innovative tourism development initiatives.
