SuperNationals VIII: A Chess Extravaganza in Orlando

Orlando, FL – April 2025 – This May, chess enthusiasts from across the nation will converge in sunny Orlando for the highly anticipated SuperNationals VIII, set to take place from May 8-11. This unique event combines the national High School, Middle School, and Elementary School championships, promising an unforgettable long weekend of strategy, competition, and camaraderie.

Kickoff Events and Exciting Competitions

The festivities will commence on Thursday, May 8, with the thrilling bughouse championships at 11 a.m. (EDT), followed by the US Chess National Puzzle Solving Championship in partnership with ChessKid at 3 p.m. Participants can also register for a simul with US Chess Communication Manager and national master Bryan Tillis, before the day wraps up with blitz championships across five sections starting at 5 p.m.

From Friday to Sunday, the main championships will unfold across 26 class sections, featuring a seven-round Swiss format with a time control of G/90 and a 10-second delay per move. Medals and national titles await individual players and teams in all divisions, including K-12, K-8, K-6, K-5, K-3, and K-1.

Star-Studded Guest Appearances

Adding to the excitement, SuperNationals VIII will host a lineup of renowned chess grandmasters. Special guest GM Leinier Dominguez will engage in six hours of blitz matches against challengers throughout the weekend. Other esteemed guests, including U.S. Women’s Champion IM/WGM Carissa Yip and GM Awonder Liang, will also deliver lectures and participate in blitz sessions.

The event will feature a dedicated Girls Club Room, sponsored by the Susan Polgar Foundation, where young female players can engage in game analysis, lectures, and simultaneous exhibitions with WGM Katerina Nemcova and WIM Carolina Blanco.

Engaging Activities for All Ages

Beyond the competitive spirit, SuperNationals VIII offers a plethora of activities for attendees of all ages. Adults can participate in a Friends and Family Tournament or attend seminars on building school chess programs and preparing for international youth events. The event will also include fun activities like “human chess,” trivia contests, and a station for crafting Mother’s Day cards, making it a family-friendly affair.

Live Coverage and Streaming

For the first time, US Chess will provide live coverage of every round of the tournament, hosted by WGM Sabina Foisor on the US Chess Twitch channel. Viewers can expect expert analysis, interviews, and the opportunity to submit their games for review.

Last Call for Registration

With registration open until 11:00 a.m. EDT on May 7, aspiring participants are encouraged to sign up soon, as there will be no on-site registration for the main tournament. Attendees can also take advantage of nearby attractions, including Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, making it a perfect getaway for families.
