British Indian Chess Prodigigy Shreyas Royal Becomes England’s Youngest Grandmaster

British Indian chess prodigy Shreyas Royal has made history by becoming England’s youngest grandmaster at just 15 years old. His latest victory in the British Chess Championships in Hull last week earned him the final GM Norm, a prestigious achievement in the world of chess.

Shreyas’ journey to this milestone has been nothing short of remarkable. Born in India, he moved to the UK at the age of three with his parents, who were granted leave to remain in the country due to his exceptional talent in chess. His father’s work visa had expired in 2018, but the family’s contribution to the chess community led to a reconsideration by the Home Office, ultimately resulting in British citizenship for Shreyas.

His father, Jitendra Singh, expressed his pride in his son’s accomplishment, stating, “It feels great to pay off part of what the country had done for us.” Shreyas himself shared words of wisdom for aspiring young chess players, encouraging them to persevere through setbacks and failures.

Shreyas’ success in the British Chess Championships included defeating top Grand Masters and drawing with the eventual winner. His goal now is to make it to the national chess team and continue reaching new heights in the game.

The support for Shreyas’ talent extends beyond his family, with politicians and the English Chess Federation recognizing his potential as a “great chess prospect.” Last year, he was part of a group of young prodigies invited to 10 Downing Street as the government announced a significant investment in promoting chess in schools across England.

Shreyas’ story serves as an inspiration to young chess players everywhere, showcasing the power of dedication, perseverance, and the support of a community that believes in your potential.
