The 13th edition of Norway Chess is set to be an exciting event with the first classical meeting between World Champion GM Gukesh Dommaraju and world number one GM Magnus Carlsen since Gukesh claimed the title in Singapore. The tournament will maintain its hallmark traditions, featuring the same format, prize fund, and venue as previous years.

The world’s top players will gather in Stavanger, Norway, from May 26 to June 7 to compete in a six-player double round-robin classical tournament. Additionally, the Norway Chess Women event will continue with six strong players.

The field for Norway Chess remains extremely strong, with six of the world’s top eight ranked players participating. Notable players include six-time champion Magnus Carlsen, 2023 winner Hikaru Nakamura, and 2018 champion Fabiano Caruana. World Champion Gukesh, rising Indian star Arjun Erigaisi, and China’s Wei Yi will also make their tournament debuts.

The highlight of the event will be the classical meeting between Gukesh and Carlsen, marking their first encounter since the World Cup quarterfinal in 2023. Despite Carlsen’s decreasing involvement in classical chess, Norway Chess organizers are optimistic about his continued participation in future editions.

The Norway Chess Women event will feature top players such as Ju Wenjun, Lei Tingjie, Koneru Humpy, Anna Muzychuk, and newcomer Sara Khadem. The tournament will run from May 26 to June 7, with players competing in classical chess and an armageddon game in case of a draw.
