Superbet Chess Classic Romania 2024: Gukesh and Caruana Secure Wins in Round 1

The Superbet Chess Classic Romania, the second leg of the 2024 Grand Chess Tour, kicked off in Bucharest with some exciting games on the first day. Grandmasters Gukesh Dommaraju and Fabiano Caruana emerged victorious in their respective matches, setting the stage for an intense competition ahead.

In his first classical game since winning the Candidates, Gukesh defeated wildcard GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac in a thrilling encounter. Despite Deac’s strong performance, Gukesh managed to secure a win after a topsy-turvy battle on the board. On the other hand, Caruana found himself in trouble against GM Alireza Firouzja but managed to turn the game around and clinch a victory.

The tournament, held at the Grand Hotel Bucharest with a prize fund of $350,000, also saw draws in the games between Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Anish Giri and Wesley So.
