Exciting Results from Round 2 of the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad

GM Fabiano Caruana has made a strong start to the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, with a sparkling win over Singaporean GM Jingyao Tin. This victory has propelled Caruana back above the 2800 rating mark, showcasing his exceptional skill and form in the tournament.

In addition to Caruana’s impressive performance, GMs Gukesh Dommaraju and Richard Rapport also secured winning debuts in the tournament. However, World Champion Ding Liren was held to a draw in his opening match.

Notably, GM Magnus Carlsen, representing 6th seed Norway, sat out round two of the Olympiad. Despite this, Norway faced a tough challenge from 50th seed Canada and was held to a 2-2 draw in the round.

On the women’s side of the competition, Georgia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan faced individual upsets but managed to continue their winning streak in round two. One of the standout performances was WIM Olena Martynkova’s upset victory over IM Yuliia Osmak in a closely contested match between Lithuania and Ukraine.

As the competition progresses, the excitement and intensity of the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad are set to increase. Round three is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 13, with top teams vying for supremacy in the prestigious event.
