Celebrating 90 Years: Oscar Panno Among Oldest Living Chess Grandmasters

Argentine chess grandmaster Oscar Panno celebrated his 90th birthday on Monday, making him one of the oldest living grandmasters in the world. Panno, who was born on March 17, 1935, in Buenos Aires, is ranked sixth on the list of the oldest living chess grandmasters compiled by Stefan Löffler in his chess calendar.

Panno’s love for chess began at a young age when he learned the rules of the game from his father and older brother. He quickly became “chess addicted” and joined the Club Atlético River Plate at the age of 12, where he honed his skills and passion for the game.

Throughout his career, Panno achieved numerous successes, including winning the Argentine national championship multiple times and becoming the FIDE U20 World Champion in 1953. He also participated in several Interzonal tournaments and represented Argentina in eleven Chess Olympiads.

After retiring from competitive play, Panno worked as a chess teacher and trainer in various chess clubs, leaving a lasting impact on the chess community. In recognition of his contributions to the game, he has received numerous awards and accolades, including being named an “Outstanding Personality of Argentine Culture” by the Buenos Aires Parliament.

Despite his age, Panno remains active in the chess community and even launched a YouTube channel during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, where he offered free live lessons every Saturday. His legacy in the world of chess is further cemented by two opening variations of the King’s Indian Defence that bear his name.

As Oscar Panno celebrates this milestone birthday, his dedication to the game and his lasting impact on the chess world continue to inspire players of all ages.
