Chess.com Fair Play Policy and Resources
Chess.com is taking a stand against cheating in chess and is committed to maintaining a fair and clean platform for players worldwide. With a dedicated Fair Play team consisting of researchers, statisticians, analysts, event proctors, engineers, and chess enthusiasts, Chess.com is working tirelessly to protect the integrity of the game.
Led by the Director of Fair Play, FM Dan Rozovsky, the team is divided into four critical divisions: Research and Development, Investigation and Detection, Operations, and Communications. Each division plays a crucial role in upholding the Fair Play Policy and ensuring that all players adhere to the rules.
The Research and Development team, led by Roland Walker, utilizes detailed data to identify players who may be cheating. They develop algorithms, conduct experiments, and study historical data to detect cheat detection signals and minimize false positives.
The Investigation and Detection team, led by Gerard Le-Marechal, handles day-to-day fair play cases, adjudicates appeals, validates tournament results, and analyzes players competing in prize money events.
The Operations team, led by Sean Arn, works to protect all events run on Chess.com by sharing event-specific information, conducting Fair Play checks, adjudicating issues, and enforcing protocols.
The Communications team, led by IM Kassa Korley, disseminates important information to titled players and the Chess.com community, shares Fair Play policy and guidelines, addresses player concerns, and administers event rules and streaming regulations.
Chess.com analyzes over 2.5 million games per day and has closed over 1 million accounts in 2023 alone, with approximately 3,000 closures per day. The Fair Play team has also reviewed around 39,000 account closure appeals, granting only 0.3% of them.
For players participating in prize events, Fair Play checks may be required, and players must adhere to specific guidelines, including setting up cameras, having open mics, and showing display settings.
Chess.com also has specific requirements for streamers participating in events, with different time controls and viewer delays for each event. Streamers must follow these guidelines to ensure fair play.
Overall, Chess.com’s Fair Play team is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring a level playing field for all players. With their rigorous monitoring and enforcement measures, they are committed to creating a safe and fair environment for chess enthusiasts worldwide.
