The Rise of Chess: From School Clubs to Fashion Trends

The game of chess is experiencing a renaissance like never before, with a surge in popularity among school children, the rise of chess competition shows on television, and the emergence of new platforms for viewing and playing the game.

Chess clubs in schools are booming, with over 3,000 projects UK-wide and a growing demand for chess sets and lessons. The Queen’s Gambit, a Netflix series released in 2020, is credited with sparking renewed interest in the game, with its protagonist being a female chess prodigy.

The game is no longer male-dominated, with a new generation of female stars emerging, such as nine-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan and India’s Tania Sachdev. Tournaments are seeing record attendance, with a changing demographic that includes more young adults and women.

Chess is not just a game, but a cultural phenomenon, with fashion brands like Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela incorporating chess into their campaigns and designs. Chess boards have become a must-have for interior design enthusiasts, with luxury brands like Prada and Hermès offering high-end sets.

Despite the allure of luxury chess sets, the essence of the game remains the same, with its timeless logic and strategic depth captivating players of all ages and backgrounds. As Malcolm Pein, chief executive of Chess in Schools and Communities, puts it, “Chess is one of the world’s oldest games. It has got a sense of logic that has enabled it to remain the same. Computer games come and go, but chess has been around since the 8th century.”

With chess becoming more accessible and appealing to a new generation of players, it seems that the game’s enduring appeal will continue to grow in the years to come.
