Chess Champion Tunde Onakoya’s Heartwarming Story of Adopting Two Brothers After Tragedy

Nigeria’s Chess Champion Adopts Brothers, One Becomes Chess Champion in US

In a heartwarming tale of resilience and triumph, Nigeria’s chess champion, Tunde Onakoya, has shared the emotional story of two brothers he adopted after their mother passed away, with one of them now achieving success as a chess champion in the United States.

Onakoya, known for using chess to empower underprivileged children, first met Jamiu and Ayomide in 2018 when they were living in the slums of Majidun, Ikorodu, Lagos. Jamiu, a curious and bright young boy working as a roadside mechanic, caught Onakoya’s attention, leading to an invitation for both brothers to join his weekend chess academy.

As Onakoya grew closer to the boys, he learned of their family’s struggles, including their mother’s tragic accident that left her disabled and their father’s abandonment. When their mother fell critically ill in 2019, she made a heartfelt plea for Onakoya to care for her sons if anything happened to her.

Tragically, she passed away two weeks later, and Onakoya fulfilled his promise by taking in Jamiu and Ayomide. With his support, Jamiu excelled in chess, eventually becoming a champion and pursuing his university education. Meanwhile, Ayomide found success as a track and field star in his final year of secondary school.

Seven years later, Jamiu achieved a significant milestone by winning the ICN Chess Championship in New York, triumphing over 200 USCF-rated players and earning a $500 scholarship. Onakoya expressed his immense pride and joy for Jamiu’s accomplishments, reflecting on the journey they had taken together.

Through his dedication and mentorship, Onakoya has not only transformed the lives of these two brothers but also inspired others with their story of perseverance and success. As he continues to support and uplift underprivileged children through chess, Onakoya’s impact resonates far beyond the chessboard, touching hearts and changing lives for the better.
