“Chess Moms’ Tournament 2024: A Family Affair Supported by US Chess Women’s Program”

The Chess Moms’ tournament held in Raleigh, North Carolina on April 29th was a heartwarming and inspiring event that brought together mothers, grandmothers, and even grandfathers for a day of friendly competition and family bonding. Supported by a grant from the US Chess Women’s Program, the tournament saw eleven courageous women gather at the Hunter Elementary School cafeteria to play rated games, with nine of them playing for the very first time.

The event kicked off with a pre-tournament lesson taught by WIM Michelle Prince and WFM Anuprita Patil of the Kings and Queens Chess Academy. The lesson covered important chess moves and strategies, sparking confidence and excitement among the participants. As the women took their seats for the games, the room grew quiet, with children eagerly watching their mothers and grandparents play.

The tournament not only provided an opportunity for the participants to improve their chess skills but also gave them a new appreciation for the game and the challenges their children face when playing. The children, who were playing their own games on the other side of the cafeteria, showed support and encouragement to their parents and grandparents throughout the event.

The tournament ended with the participants receiving trophies, with some winning their very first trophy alongside their children. The success of the event has inspired the organizers to plan more mom’s tournaments in the future, with the possibility of hosting similar events in other locations.

Overall, the Chess Moms’ tournament was a celebration of family, friendship, and the joy of playing chess together. As more working parents express interest in participating, the organizers are looking forward to hosting more events in the coming months. Happy Mother’s Day from US Chess!
