Delhi University Women’s Chess Team Triumphs at North Zone Championship: A Journey of Strategy, Unity, and Ambition

Chess Champions: Delhi University Women’s Team Claims Gold at North Zone Championship

Delhi, India – The chessboard has become a battleground of strategy and skill, and the latest champions are a group of six remarkable young women from Delhi University (DU). After making headlines on the international stage, chess mania has now taken root on college campuses, culminating in a triumphant victory at the North Zone Inter University Chess Championship held in Meerut.

Leading the charge was captain Tanishka Kotia, a first-year student at the Delhi School of Economics (DSE). For her, the victory was not just about the gold medal; it was a deeply personal achievement. “Playing as an individual is different, but when we play for our university, it brings immense pride,” she expressed. “Winning gold is a feeling like no other. This is dedicated to all DU students, professors, and Delhiites.”

The journey to the championship was no easy feat. The six players were selected from a pool of over 100 competitors through rigorous trials. Only the top six made the cut, representing various colleges within DU. Despite their diverse backgrounds, the team quickly found synergy. Anishka Vikram, a first-year student from Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), noted, “We had a diversity in our team, but we were all great friends before DU. It was never an issue to unite and play together.”

Surbhi from Miranda House echoed this sentiment, stating, “Chess created an instant bond among us. We spent time practicing and analyzing games together, all with the common goal of bringing the North Zone title to Delhi University.”

Balancing academics with the demands of chess is no small task. The players credit their professors for supporting their dual commitments. Varshita Jain, a final-year student from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), shared, “My professors accommodate my academic deadlines, especially when I miss classes due to tournaments.” Surbhi added, “Chess has improved my concentration and decision-making, which helps in my studies.”

Since their victory, congratulations have flooded in from across the university, with friends and professors alike sending warm messages of support. Yet, for these champions, this is just the beginning. The gold medal has only strengthened their ambitions. Tanishka aims for the Grand Master title, while Surbhi dreams of representing India in international tournaments.

As the chess craze continues to grow in Delhi, these young women are not just champions; they are trailblazers, inspiring a new generation of players to take up the game. The future of chess in India looks bright, and these six women are leading the way.
