Motorists baffled by stone chessboard installed in Nottingham parking lot at taxpayers’ expense

The installation of a stone chessboard in a parking lot in Sherwood, Nottingham has left motorists and residents scratching their heads. The addition, part of a £17 million upgrade to car parks in Nottingham and Derby, has been met with criticism for taking up valuable parking space.

Local resident Philip Towell and his daughter Coco were unimpressed with the new feature, calling it “rubbish” and questioning its safety. Others, like Amanda Riley, expressed confusion over the logic of installing a chessboard in a car park, noting the impracticality of playing in such a noisy and exposed environment.

Critics have also pointed out the lack of chess pieces on the board and questioned the feasibility of playing outdoor chess in England’s cold weather. One Reddit user even called the installation a “monstrosity” and criticized the council for prioritizing a chess table over parking spaces for small businesses.

Despite the backlash, Nottingham City Council defended the chessboard, stating that it could be used for various activities such as enjoying a cup of tea or reading a book. They emphasized that the project is experimental and subject to evaluation and feedback from the public.

As the debate over the stone chessboard continues, it remains to be seen whether the quirky addition will become a beloved community feature or a costly misstep.
