Winter Climbers Update: Manaslu and Makalu Base Camp Reached, Annapurna Expedition in Doubt
Winter climbers have reached Base Camp on two of the world’s highest peaks, Manaslu and Makalu, while the Annapurna team faces uncertainty and potential cancellation of their expedition.
On Manaslu, climbers Simone Moro of Italy, Nima Rinji Sherpa of Nepal, and Oswald Pereira of Poland have officially begun their winter attempt on the mountain. The team plans to climb in a single, alpine-style push without supplementary oxygen, facing challenging conditions with high winds forecasted in the coming days.
Meanwhile, on Makalu, climbers Abolfazl Gozali of Iran and three Sherpas have arrived at Base Camp, braving even windier conditions than on Manaslu. Despite the harsh weather, the team is determined to continue their expedition.
In contrast, the Annapurna team is facing setbacks as leader Alex Txikon of Spain had to return home due to health issues. The remaining team members are considering canceling the expedition due to the absence of their leader and unfavorable weather forecasts.
As winter climbers face challenges and uncertainties on the world’s highest peaks, the mountaineering community watches closely to see how these expeditions will unfold.
