Legendary Chess Clash Kicks Off at Saint Louis Chess Club

Saint Louis, MO – The excitement is palpable as the Saint Louis Chess Club prepares to unveil its newly expanded 30,000-square-foot campus this October, launching a month filled with thrilling chess events. The highlight? A three-day exhibition match featuring two of the greatest chess players in history: Viswanathan Anand and Garry Kasparov.

Kicking off on October 8, the event, dubbed “Clutch Chess: The Legends,” will see these titans of the game face off in a unique Chess960 (Fischer Random) format. This innovative style, which randomizes the starting positions of the pieces, promises to keep both players and spectators on their toes. Over the course of twelve games, Anand and Kasparov will alternate between rapid and blitz time controls, with four games played each day.

The stakes are high, with a total prize fund of $144,000 up for grabs. The distinctive “clutch” scoring system adds an extra layer of strategy, as points and prize values increase each day. On the opening day, a win will earn players 1 point, while draws will yield ½ point. As the match progresses, the rewards for victories will escalate, culminating in a potential 3 points for a win on the final day.

Schedule:

  • October 8: Matches start at 3:00 PM local time
  • October 9: Matches start at 12:00 PM local time
  • October 10: Matches start at 12:00 PM local time

The live commentary will be provided by chess legends GM Yasser Seirawan, Maurice Ashley, and James “Dash” Patterson, ensuring that fans will not miss a moment of the action.

In addition to the exhibition match, ChessBase is re-releasing Garry Kasparov’s classic video course on the Queen’s Gambit, complete with modern training features. This timeless instructional video, originally recorded in 2004, is set to inspire a new generation of chess enthusiasts.

As the chess community gears up for this monumental event, the Saint Louis Chess Club stands ready to welcome fans and players alike to witness history in the making. Don’t miss your chance to see two legends clash on the board!
