D Gukesh Overtakes Arjun Erigaisi to Become New India No. 1 at Tata Steel Chess 2025

In the world of chess, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025 has been full of surprises and upsets. Reigning world chess champion D Gukesh has been making waves, currently ranked World No. 5 and now the new India No. 1, surpassing Arjun Erigaisi.

The tournament started on a rough note for Arjun, as he suffered a defeat in his opening game against Pentala Harikrishna. Despite a draw against Anish Giri, a crushing loss to R Praggnanandhaa has left Arjun struggling at the bottom of the Masters leaderboard with just 1/5 points.

On the other hand, Gukesh has been in top form, with victories over top players like Anish Giri and Vincent Keymer, as well as draws against strong opponents like Fabiano Caruana and Vladimir Fedoseev. Since his historic triumph over Ding Liren last month, Gukesh remains undefeated in the tournament.

As the tournament progresses, Gukesh has gained 7 points in his live rating, while Arjun has dropped 21.5 points due to his struggles in Wijk aan Zee. With only five rounds completed so far, the standings could still change before the tournament ends.

Both players will have a rest day on January 23 to regroup and strategize for the remaining rounds. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the tournament unfolds and whether Arjun can bounce back from his setbacks. Stay tuned for more updates on the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025.
