Chess Prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju Receives Hero’s Welcome in Chennai

Mumbai: The city of Chennai was buzzing with excitement on Monday morning as hundreds of fans gathered outside the Chennai International Airport arrival terminal to welcome home the newest chess world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju.

Gukesh, an 18-year-old prodigy, made history last Thursday by defeating China’s Ding Liren in the World Championship Match in Singapore, becoming the youngest ever player to hold the title. The victory also marked a significant moment for India, as Gukesh became only the second Indian to win the prestigious title, following in the footsteps of the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

The atmosphere outside the airport was electric as fans eagerly awaited Gukesh’s arrival. Security officials had to repeatedly urge the crowd to make way for other passengers, but the excitement was palpable as Gukesh finally emerged from the arrival gate, greeted by cheers and applause.

Gukesh’s journey to the world championship title was a remarkable one. Last year, he clinched victory in the Chennai Masters tournament, earning him a spot in the Candidates event in Toronto. His subsequent win in the Candidates event set him on the path to challenge Ding for the world title.

As Gukesh made his way through the crowd, he was met with chants of “Gukesh, Gukesh” and showered with flower petals. Despite the chaos, the young champion remained composed, holding his winner’s trophy and gold medal proudly.

After being escorted to his designated vehicle, Gukesh was taken to his school, Velammal Vidyalaya, where he was greeted by teachers and staff. In a speech to his schoolmates, Gukesh expressed his gratitude for their support and shared his aspirations for the future.

“My target has always been to become the best player in the world,” Gukesh said. “This is a big achievement, but there is still a long way to go. My goal is to keep enjoying chess and to one day become the best player in the world.”

As Gukesh sets his sights on future victories, his triumph has not only brought him fame and fortune but also inspired a new generation of chess enthusiasts in India. The young champion’s journey from a prize-winning bicycle to a luxury car to the world title is a testament to his dedication and passion for the game.

For Gukesh, the world championship title is just the beginning. With his sights set on dominating the world of chess, the young prodigy is poised to make his mark on the international stage and inspire a new era of chess excellence in India.
