Exciting Results from the CrunchLabs Masters 2024: French Showdown in Division I Winners Final

The French chess scene is heating up as the top two players, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and GM Alireza Firouzja, are set to face off in the Division I Winners Final of the CrunchLabs Masters 2024. Vachier-Lagrave once again proved to be a tough opponent for former world champion Magnus Carlsen, while Firouzja overcame Jan-Krzysztof Duda to secure his spot in the final.

In the Losers Bracket, GMs Wesley So and Ian Nepomniachtchi respectively eliminated Fabiano Caruana and Dmitry Andreikin, keeping their tournament hopes alive. The Division II Winners Semifinals will feature GM Alexander Grischuk vs. Jules Moussard and GM Vidit Gujrathi vs. Vladimir Fedoseev, with Fedoseev’s victory knocking Hikaru Nakamura down to the Losers Bracket.

In the Division III Winners Semifinals, GM Arjun Erigaisi will face off against Daniil Dubov, while David Anton Guijarro will take on Evgeny Alekseev. A highlight from the division includes an incredibly dynamic and bizarre opening played in GM David Paravyan vs. Arjun’s match.

The action continues on Sunday, July 21, with division play starting at 11 a.m. ET / 17:00 CEST / 8:30 p.m. IST. The CrunchLabs Masters is part of the Champions Chess Tour and features a $300,000 prize fund. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting matches as the tournament progresses.
