“Divya Deshmukh: A Rising Star in Indian Chess”
Divya Deshmukh Makes History by Winning World Junior Girls’ Chess Championship
In a historic moment for Indian chess, 18-year-old Divya Deshmukh from Nagpur emerged victorious in the World junior girls’ chess championship. Despite the tough competition and the pressure of maintaining her high Elo rating, Divya managed to clinch the coveted title, becoming only the fourth Indian girl to do so.
Standing nearly as tall as her, the championship trophy proved to be a challenge for Divya to handle. However, she proudly posed with it for pictures before taking it back to her room at the Gift City Club. This victory was a dream come true for Divya, who had been aspiring to win the World junior championship since she was a young girl.
With a remarkable performance of winning nine out of 11 games and drawing the other two, Divya not only secured the title but also gained more than seven Elo points. Despite the pressure of maintaining her high rating, she remained focused and determined throughout the tournament.
Speaking about her win, Divya expressed her relief at achieving her goal and highlighted the importance of the tournament being held in India. She credited her success to the support of her family, especially her father who covers her expenses as she lacks a sponsor.
As part of a new generation of talented Indian chess players, Divya is proud to be contributing to the growth of the game in the country. With rising stars like D. Gukesh, Arjun Eriagaisi, and R. Praggnanandhaa making headlines, Indian chess is experiencing a golden era of success.
Despite her individual achievements, Divya emphasized the need for more sponsorship in Indian chess to support the development of young players. As she basks in the glory of her World junior girls’ chess championship win, Divya remains focused on her future goals and aspirations in the world of chess.
