Exploring the Marquee Set Pieces of “The Amateur” with Cinematographer Martin Ruhe
The Amateur: Behind the Scenes of the Thrilling Set Pieces
Cinematographer Martin Ruhe takes us behind the scenes of some of the marquee set pieces in the action-packed film, The Amateur. Spoilers ahead!
One of the most intense sequences in the film is the final showdown on Schiller’s boat, where Charlie (Rami Malek) finally confronts the man responsible for his wife’s death. Shot in a bay near Marseille, the crew faced challenging conditions with stormy seas and strong winds. With multiple cameras on different boats and a helicopter capturing the action, the team had only one night to get the perfect shot.
Another standout moment is the infinity-pool-in-the-sky sequence, where Charlie’s intelligence is on full display. The pool, located between two houses in London, was recreated in a studio for the dramatic collapse scene. Using a combination of practical effects and visual effects, the team created a thrilling moment as the pool crumbles and the man plunges to his death.
Throughout these intense sequences, Ruhe and the crew faced numerous challenges, from lighting the open water scene to coordinating stunts in rough seas. But with meticulous planning and expert execution, they were able to bring these heart-pounding moments to life on screen.
The Amateur is now playing in theaters, offering audiences a thrilling ride filled with action and suspense.
