In a groundbreaking development for Indian chess, former All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Sanjay Kapoor has been unanimously elected as the FIDE India Zone President (3.7) at the annual meeting of the AICF.

The announcement came during the annual general meeting (AGM) of AICF in Ahmedabad, where Dr. Sanjay Kapoor was elected as the Zone President for a four-year term. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich extended his congratulations to Dr. Sanjay Kapoor for his new role as the FIDE India zone president.

Dr. Sanjay Kapoor’s appointment marks a significant moment for chess governance in India, as he takes on the responsibility of overseeing the game’s growth and development on a global scale.

Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Dr. Sanjay Kapoor stated, “It is an immense honor to be elected as the FIDE India Zone President. I am committed to the growth of chess in every corner of our country and ensuring that we produce Grandmasters from each and every state.”

He added, “My experience with the 44th Chess Olympiad has shown me the incredible potential we have, and I am excited to work towards a bright future for chess in India and internationally.”

Dr. Sanjay Kapoor played a key role in successfully organizing the 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad in India during his tenure as the AICF president.

In other chess news, FIDE recently launched a Guinness World Record attempt for the most games played online and over-the-board in 24 hours on International Chess Day (July 20). With over 109 national federations and major online chess platforms participating, nearly 350 events were held globally.

FIDE officials, including President Arkady Dvorkovich and former world champions Viswanathan Anand, Zhu Chen, and Alexandra Kosteniuk, gathered in Paris to celebrate 100 years since the founding of FIDE. The central ceremony brought together renowned players and chess officials from France and around the world.

The election of Dr. Sanjay Kapoor as the FIDE India Zone President signals a new chapter in the development of chess in India, with a focus on promoting the game at both national and international levels.
