Dubai Open Chess Championship kicks off with draws dominating the first round
The Dubai Open Chess Championship kicked off with a bang as draws dominated the first round of the prestigious tournament. With over 160 players from 40 countries participating, both male and female chess enthusiasts showcased their skills in a thrilling display of strategy and intellect.
The tournament, now in its 24th edition, was officially opened by Khalid Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dubai Chess Club. The event was graced by the presence of Abdul Karim Al Marzouqi, Secretary General of the Emirates Chess Federation, and other esteemed members of the club’s Board of Directors.
In category (A), top seed Timur Rajabov from Azerbaijan faced off against Georgian player Georgi Sebashvili in a tense match that ended in a draw. Meanwhile, Indian player Raunak secured a victory over Bangladeshi opponent Manon. The competition was fierce as players from different countries battled it out on the chessboard.
Category (B) saw Indian player Vanketic defeating the first seed Rajarishi in a surprising upset. Zambian player Mulenga also emerged victorious against Indian Safin, showcasing the diverse talent on display at the championship.
The tournament, held in accordance with the Swiss system, will consist of 9 rounds with a match time of 90 minutes and 30 seconds added for each move. Chess enthusiasts and spectators alike can look forward to more exciting matches as the competition continues until the second of June.
