Erling Haaland Enters the Chess Arena: A New Chapter for Norway Chess

In an unexpected yet thrilling crossover between sports, Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland has made headlines by stepping into the world of chess. The prolific striker has become a strategic investor in Norway Chess and its newly launched Total Chess World Championship Tour, a venture that has already garnered approval from FIDE for a remarkable minimum of 16 years.

Teaming up with Norwegian businessman Morten Borge, Haaland has co-founded Chess Mates, which is set to become a significant stakeholder in Norway Chess. This partnership marks a bold move to elevate the profile of chess on a global scale.

In a press release, Haaland expressed his enthusiasm for the game, stating, “Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything.” His passion for the game is evident, as he believes the Total Chess World Championship Tour has the potential to transform chess into a major spectator sport.

Haaland’s investment comes at a time when Norway Chess has already made significant strides in promoting the game. “The team behind Norway Chess has already done an impressive job growing the event, and joining the project was too exciting to pass up,” he added.

Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess, welcomed Haaland’s involvement, emphasizing the potential impact of his global following. “We expect the new championship to become one of the most prestigious events in the global chess calendar. The fact that Erling is joining us as an investor says a great deal about the commercial potential of this tour,” Madland stated. He further noted that Haaland’s innovative ideas will be invaluable as they move into the final phase of selecting host cities for the inaugural tour.

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will feature four tournaments each year, hosted in different cities, culminating in the crowning of a combined world champion across three formats: fast classic, rapid, and blitz. A pilot tournament is slated to kick off this year, with a full season set to launch in 2027.

As Haaland continues to dominate the football pitch, his foray into chess promises to bring a fresh wave of excitement to the game, attracting new audiences and elevating its status on the global stage. With the backing of a sports icon, the future of chess looks brighter than ever.
