EU Sanctions Former World Chess Championship Challenger Sergey Karjakin for Support of Russia’s War in Ukraine

The European Union has imposed sanctions on former world chess championship challenger Sergey Karjakin for his continued support of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. The EU’s new measures target 48 individuals and 35 entities, including Karjakin, with restrictions, asset freezes, and travel bans.

Karjakin, a once-celebrated chess champion, is described by the EU as a Senator of the Russian Federation Council representing Crimea and is accused of undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Despite being inactive in FIDE-rated classical games, Karjakin remains a controversial figure due to his political affiliations.

In response to the sanctions, Karjakin expressed disappointment but affirmed his commitment to working for the benefit of his country. The chess grandmaster’s involvement with the Kremlin has led to his exclusion from major chess tournaments and a ban from FIDE in 2022.

The EU’s move to sanction Karjakin highlights his active support for Russia’s war efforts, including visits to occupied Ukrainian territories and coordination of military aid. Karjakin’s political career has flourished with his alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, earning him accolades and a seat in the Russian Senate.

The sanctions also target Olympic gymnastics champion Nikita Nagornyy, who is accused of aiding in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. The EU’s actions underscore the ongoing repercussions for individuals who support Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
