Highlights from the 2024 National Elementary School Championship in Columbus, Ohio

The 2024 National Elementary School Championship in Columbus, Ohio was a weekend full of excitement and passion for chess. With 1,586 players from 42 states competing, the tournament showcased the dedication and skill of young chess enthusiasts from all over the country.

One highlight of the event was the participation of two elementary schools through the Title I Schools program and grants. Dishman Elementary from Harlingen, Texas and PS 31 Samuel F. Dupont from Brooklyn, New York fielded teams in various sections, with Dishman Elementary’s K-5 U-1200 team bringing home a fifth place trophy.

In addition to the competitive aspect of the tournament, the Girls Club Room provided a unique experience for players and families, with special guests WIM/FM Maggie Feng, WIM Dr. Alexey Root, and the Alton Family adding their expertise and positive energy to the event.

Other notable sights at the championship included the #SafePlay buttons worn by staff members, highlighting the SafePlay Policy implemented at the event. Former champions, like CM Joseph Wan, also made appearances, showcasing the legacy of champions who now bring their own students to compete.
