Ding Liren’s Struggles as World Chess Champion: A Reality Check and Road to Redemption

World Chess Champion Ding Liren is facing a challenging period in his career, as he struggles to find his form after being crowned the world champion. Despite his rare appearances in tournaments since winning the title last year, Ding has faced disappointing results in recent events, including the Tata Steel Chess event and the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T Challenge.

In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Ding Liren opened up about his struggles, admitting that he feels he has become a weaker player since becoming world champion. He revealed that he has been losing ratings in both classical and rapid tournaments, and even finished last in a tournament in China among six players.

Ding Liren also discussed the weight of the world champion’s crown, stating that it has become lighter over time as he has taken a break from competitive chess. He acknowledged the comment from Magnus Carlsen about being ‘broken’ after becoming world champion, admitting that it was a difficult time for him.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Norway Chess event, Ding Liren expressed his goal of not finishing last in the six-player field. He also talked about the upcoming World Chess Championship battle with Indian teenager D Gukesh, noting that it will be a new challenge for him.

Despite his recent struggles, Ding Liren remains optimistic about his future in chess, hoping to regain his top form in time for the World Championship in November. With a renewed focus on preparation and determination, Ding Liren is determined to show his best version on the chessboard once again.
